SomatoEmotional Release® (SER®)

SomatoEmotional Release® (SER®) is an advanced application of craniosacral therapy that explores the relationship between the body, the nervous system, and lived experience. Developed within the teachings of the Upledger Institute, SER recognizes that physical restrictions in the body may be connected with unresolved emotional or physiological stress responses.

This work is based on the understanding that the body records experience not only cognitively, but also through tissue tension, autonomic patterns, and protective responses. SomatoEmotional Release offers a structured, client-led approach to supporting awareness, integration, and resolution of these patterns within the scope of bodywork.

How SomatoEmotional Release Works
SomatoEmotional Release builds upon craniosacral therapy by combining gentle manual techniques with mindful presence, verbal processing (when appropriate), and attention to the client’s internal experience. The practitioner supports the client in noticing sensations, emotions, images, or memories that may arise as the body releases restrictions.

The process is non-directive and paced according to the client’s nervous system capacity. Clients are never required to relive experiences or disclose details. Instead, the work emphasizes safety, choice, and self-agency, allowing the body to guide what is ready to be processed.

When experiences arise that are outside the scope of bodywork or require additional support, referral to appropriate medical or mental health professionals is encouraged.

What SomatoEmotional Release May Support
SomatoEmotional Release is a complementary modality and is not psychotherapy or medical treatment. It is commonly used to support individuals experiencing:

-
Chronic stress or unresolved tension patterns
-
Physical symptoms associated with prolonged stress
-
Nervous system overwhelm or difficulty settling
-
Residual effects of injury, surgery, or medical procedures
-
Birth-related stress patterns (vaginal or cesarean)
-
Somatic responses linked to emotional experiences
-
Increased body awareness and mind–body integration

SER work is always offered within the craniosacral therapy container, with clear boundaries, informed consent, and respect for each client’s readiness and resources.
